CB repaired and revitalised the house and gardens, and fortunately so as the house might otherwise have been demolished by its owner. Reading about the hectic weekends, dressing-up parties and other stagy revelries, one wonders what the locals made of these flighty butterflies who appeared and disappeared. The photographs show groups of England's literati and social leaders at Ashcombe. One or two glaring typos should have been picked up by Hugo Vicker'
