Softwinds - Softwinds Then & Now (2CD)

The Soft Winds—pianist Lou Carter, guitarist Herb Ellis, and bassist Johnny Frigo—emerged from the Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra and carved out their own sound between 1946–1950, recording 16 tracks for Majestic and Mercury and writing hits like Detour Ahead and I Told Ya I Love Ya, Now Get Out. They reunited at the 1995 Floating Jazz Festival, with Frigo on violin and Keeter Betts on bass, proving their musical magic remained intact. This two-CD set features previously unreleased 1947–48 radio transcriptions and 11 tracks from the reunion, plus a lively 16-minute Jazz Speak where the trio shares stories of their history. Highly recommended, it highlights Carter’s versatile, inventive piano and the group’s unique blend inspired by the Nat King Cole Trio.

Track Listing

Disc 1:

Honeysuckle Rose

Herb Ellis & Lou Carter

Detour Ahead

Things Ain'T What They Used To Be

Too Late Now / Street Of Dreams

I Told Ya I Love Ya, Now Get Out

Thatk
