It is a very early example of a humbucker pickup and gets its name from filtering out the hum associated with single coil pickups. The sound of Filtertron pickups is characterised by mixing the warmth of PAF style humbuckers with the clarity of single coil pickups (with additional output and sustain), the narrower coils add a uniqueness to the sound that PAF style humbuckers can't quite match.
