These camouflage patterns were designed by a Munich art professor named Johann Georg Otto Schick, then the director of the German camouflage research unit, and were unique to the Waffen SS. By 1938 Helmet covers, smocks, and groundsheets (zeltbahns) were field tested and adopted into service. The early patterns of camouflage cloth were screen printed by hand, which did not allow large quantities of material to be produced efficiently.
