In search of that versatility, Duff used his first gage as a musician to purchase a Fender Jazz Bass Special that was equipped with a precision split coil pickup at the neck and a jazz bass pickup on the bridge. He then replaced the original single-coil bridge pickup with a Seymour Duncan Hot Stack Jazz Bass, eliminating any hum and increasing performance. A few years later, Duff received as a gift a bass with a Seymour Duncan Quarter Pound P-bass on the neck. The large-sized Alnico 5 magnets and the high output of the pickup gave its sound a new dimension. He then began pairing this pickup with the Hot Stack Jazz Bass on the bridge, creating a powerful combination rich in timbre, bass and attack. This duo quickly became the sonic trademark of Duff, which has since been used on numerous recordings and worldwide tours.
