Originally formed in \n\n1977 as The Coventry\nAutomatics, The Specials \n\ncombined Jamaican ska\nand Rocksteady mixed with \n\nthe energy of punk\nand launched a whole Ska \n\nRevival, which helped\nfellow like-minded bands \n\nMadness, The Beat and\nThe Selecter to release their \n\nfirst singles. The\nSpecials first single, 'Gangsters', \n\nwas released in May\n1979 with independent \n\ndistribution by Rough\nTrade and the initial pressing \n\nof just 5,000 records\nsold out. The band and label \n\nsoon signed with\nChrysalis Records who picked up \n\non the release of\n'Gangsters.' The next single, 'A \n\nMessage To You Rudy',\nfollowed in September with \n\ntheir first album\nreleased soon after in October9
