Why should you use Waste-Away gels?Whether you have a freshwater, seawater, or reef aquarium, one unexpected consequence of filtration is the removal of certain beneficial bacteria. We are not talking about the beneficial nitrifying bacteria, but rather a group of bacteria that swim freely in the water. These helpful bacteria consume nutrients like phosphates, nitrates, and organic matter. The nutrients consumed are no longer available to algae and some undesirable bacteria like cyanobacteria. Skimmers, UVC systems, filter socks, and other filtration components remove these good bacteria from the water, resulting in increased levels of nitrates and phosphates as well as the accumulation of organic matter.
