The ship was built at the shipyard Gebr.Sch\u00FCrenstedt, Bardenfleth. Its main task was to monitor and secure coastal shipping traffic, particularly in the area of the entrance to Emden harbour. The boat was decommissioned in 2000 and replaced by a new vessel, which also bears the service designation W-3.
