As a Formal Training Unit (FTU), it trained pilots for Air National Guard and USAF operational assignments. The squadron specialized in air-to-air and air-to-ground combat training. Eventually, the unit was inactivated, and Kingsley Field transitioned to an F-15C training mission under the 173t
