Balvenie Gold 30 Year Old Single Malt Whisky
Balvenie
Tasting Notes 94 points, “Needs time to open up, but the nose of this superb whisky reveals cocoa powder, heather honey, milk chocolate, dark berries, dried orange, toasted sourdough, and a growing presence of oak spices. Indulgent flavours of plum, date, dried fig, dark chocolate, and mocha, then black grape, milk chocolate, charred oak, Brazil nut, and nutmeg. The finish is mellow, with dry spices, nuts, and chocolate.” – Whisky Advocate The Balvenie Thirty is a timeless classic. There has been so much love for this dram over the years. Critic Jim Murray once described it as “amazing”, noting that “rarely have I come across a bottling of a whisky of these advanced years which is so true to the previous ones.” Serge Valentin has said, “I always love the Thirty… perfect, one of my favourite honeyed Speysiders.” There’s that immense score from Whisky Advocate above. And then there are countless medals and awards from the Scotch Whisky Masters, the International Wine & Spirit Competition, the International Spirits Challenge and many others.; Matured for three decades, The Balvenie Thirty (part of the Rare Marriages Series) is chockfull of honey, marzipan, caramelised pear, tangy marmalade, chocolate, fudge, dried apricots, mirabelle jam and Demerara sugar. Balvenie means ‘village of luck’, and the distillery certainly had good fortune when it employed a teenage apprentice in 1962. That young man is now Malt Master David C. Steward MBE, one of the most experienced men in the world of whisky and the creator of this highly regarded dram. But the quality is not down to solely to luck, it comes from hard graft and attention to detail. Thanks to a unique combination of natural alchemy and centuries-old craftsmanship, Balvenie remains one of the most independent and prestigious distilleries in all of Scotland. Situated in the heart of the Speyside region, Balvenie unusually grows a proportion of its own barley and still employs a traditional malting floor – the last of its kind in the Scottish Highlands. A resident coppersmith maintains the distinctively shaped stills, and a skilled team of coopers ensure each barrel is kept in perfect condition. It’s true, you make your own luck.
