Experience one of the great Japanese classics of the 60s with Hiroshi Teshigahara's "Woman of the Dunes." This uncut version, based on Kobo Abe's novel, is a mystifying, serene, and provoking cinematic masterpiece. Winner of a Special Jury Prize at Cannes and nominated for two Academy Awards, the film masterfully blends erotic drama with a gripping thriller, brought to life with startling black and white photography and a minimalist score. The story follows Jumpei Nika, a teacher who becomes trapped in a sandpit with a mysterious widow. As he helps her shovel away the encroaching sand, he realizes he is a prisoner. The oppressive confinement and an undeniable physical attraction lead them to become lovers, but Jumpei's obsession with freedom grows. "Woman of the Dunes" is an atmospheric, highly charged, and sensual exploration of the human condition. Its visual impact, surreal imagery, and the striking performances of Eiji Tokada and Kyoko Kishida create a remarkable cinematic experience. This DVD release features the original Japanese language version with English subtitles. Product Summary: BFI Woman of the Dunes DVD movie, directed by Hiroshi Teshigahara, released in 1964.
