Alicante tomatoes will grow anywhere, producing classic medium sized slicing tomatoes that are quick to ripen even in British summers.RHS AGMGardener's FavouriteSow: Feb to AprHarvest: Jul to SepSowing IndoorsLevel-fill a module tray with seed compost and firm gently. Water well with a fine rose. Sow seeds individually and lightly cover with vermiculite. Place in a propagator at 18–20 °C or cover the tray with cling film and leave in a warm room. Keep moist.Growing OnWhen shoots appear, remove cling film. Keep seedlings in a light position, shaded from direct sunlight. When plants have 4 leaves, transplant to 8 cm pots of potting compost. Grow coolly at a minimum temperature of 15 °C.Planting OutGradually acclimate plants to outdoor conditions over 2–3 weeks before planting out when temperatures exceed 10 °C. Transfer to large pots (minimum 30 cm), growbags, or a border 45 cm apart, either in a greenhouse or a sunny, sheltered spot outside.SupportCordon/indeterminate/vine type, requires training up canes, strings, or wires.
