Long white shanks and attractive green foliage define the Batter F1 leek, a hardy maincrop variety with a mild flavour and a long harvest period. Sow indoors January–February, thinly 1 cm deep in pre-watered seed trays, keeping at 10–15°C and moist; plant out April–May when 20 cm tall into 15 cm deep holes, filling holes with water. Space plants 15–20 cm apart with rows 25–30 cm apart; sow outdoors March–April 1 cm deep in rows 15 cm apart. To ensure a long white shaft, draw up soil around plants as they develop and keep well watered and fed regularly.
