Plant Theory

This fast-growing species rose features almost thornless stems and thrives in full sun with fertile, moist, well-drained soil. In June and July, it produces clusters of single, cerise-pink flowers with pale pink centers, followed by red, spherical autumn rose-hips. Its arching habit makes it suitable for informal flowering hedges, and its greyish-purple leaves and hips are ideal for flower arranging. These roses are grown in open fields and dug up in October or November, then potted to maintain root hydration. While dormant in winter, they should be planted as soon as possible. No immediate pruning is needed as they are pre-cut, but routine maintenance can begin in late winter the year after planting. When planting, choose a frost-free time, dig a deep hole twice as wide as the roots, and mix in composted matter. Applying a general-purpose fertilizer and a root stimulant can aid development, particularly in beds where roses have previously grown. Ensure the bud union is at soil level when back-filling and firming the soil. Water generously until established and apply a specialist rose fertilizer and a mulch of composted manure each spring, keeping it away from the stems. Since shrub roses flower best on older stems, only light formative pruning is needed in late summer. Avoid hard pruning to maintain the plant's shape. Use tough gloves to remove dead, damaged, or congested branches, and cut back one or two stems to 10-15cm above ground level if the plant becomes leggy or the center too crowded.
