Trachelospermum jasminoides (Star Jasmine) is an evergreen twining climber that produces clusters of star-shaped white flowers in summer, releasing a heady fragrance that is most noticeable in the evenings. It thrives in sun or part shade on a sheltered, sunny wall and prefers moist but well-drained fertile soil. Train stems onto wire supports, trellis or pergolas; position climbers about 45 cm from the base of a wall or structure and plant the rootball at a 45° angle to guide growth. Water regularly from spring to autumn, apply a general-purpose fertiliser in spring and prune in spring to remove damaged or crowded stems and maintain size. In regions colder than -10°C, grow under glass or in a conservatory for best results.
