The improved variety of Globe Artichoke, known as Green Globe Improved, produces larger, consistently high-quality globe-shaped heads complemented by smaller, sharp spines. This variety boasts delicious hearts that are best enjoyed when pickled, while its edible leaves add versatility to your culinary creations. With its distinctive appearance and vibrant colour, it serves as an eye-catching and unique addition to any vegetable garden. From June to September, the striking thistle-like flowers bloom, attracting beneficial bees and making it an excellent choice for a wildlife garden. Ideal conditions for growing globe artichokes include rich, fertile, well-drained soil in a sunny location, with protection from strong winds. For best results, direct sow globe artichoke seeds outdoors between March and April, once the soil is warm. Sow in a well-prepared seedbed with 2 to 3 seeds per station, ensuring drills are spaced 30cm apart. Thin out seedlings as they grow, and the thinning's can be transplanted. Typically, seeds sown outdoors will flower in the following year. This variety thrives in kitchen gardens, wildlife gardens, and low-maintenance areas, growing up to 180cm in height and spreading up to 75cm.
