The 'Conference' Pear is a much-loved variety, perfect as a dessert pear and equally good cooked. This tree produces large, bell-shaped pears with green skin and a delightfully juicy flavour. They can be eaten hard or fully ripe. Harvest time is typically October to November, picking slightly under-ripe for best results, and allowing them to ripen slowly indoors in a cool spot. While partially self-fertile, 'Conference' will produce the most abundant crops when paired with another pear variety nearby for pollination. If you only have room for one tree, ensure a neighbour has a tree nearby to act as a suitable pollinator. Expect fruit within approximately 2 years of planting, with best yields after about 5 years. Ideally suited to kitchen and wildlife gardens, this hardy tree thrives in a sunny location. It can reach a height and spread of up to 300cm.
