Its semi-vining habit makes it a space-saving choice, while the inherent resistance to powdery mildew ensures a more forgiving and successful growing experience. How to Grow: - Start seeds indoors from April to May. Sow seeds in 7.5cm (3in) pots filled with seed compost, planting them at a depth of 2cm (¾in). - Maintain a consistent temperature of 20-25°C (68-77°F) until germination, which usually occurs within 5-7 days. - After germination, allow plants to grow in cooler conditions and harden them off before transplanting outdoors, ensuring all risk of frost has passed. - For direct sowing, plant outdoors in May in a warm, well-drained spot that receives full sun. Space plants approximately 90cm (36in) apart, sowing two seeds per hole and thinning to the most vigorous seedling. - Water plants consistently to prevent the soil from drying out and keep the area free of weeds by hoeing. - To encourage robust growth and fruiting, apply a high-potash fertiliser every two weeks throughout the growing season. - Harvest your butternut squash before the first frost arrives. The fruits are ready when the skin has hardened and you hear a hollow sound when tapped. Cut the fruits from the vine, leaving a small portion of the stem attached.
