Runner Beans: A prolific climber producing a generous harvest of delicious beans. Ideal for larger gardens or trained onto a wigwam structure where space is limited. Sow indoors from mid-April for transplanting, or direct sow outdoors from late May to early July. Indoors, sow seeds 5cm (2 inches) deep in 7.5cm (3 inch) pots or trays of free-draining compost. Maintain a temperature of 18-20°C (64-68°F) until germination (7-10 days). Direct sowing outdoors requires a depth of 5cm (2 inches), spacing plants 30cm (12 inches) apart in rows 1.5m (5 feet) apart. Mulch generously around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Regular watering is crucial, especially during flowering, with a liquid feed every fortnight during midsummer. Pinch out growing tips once they reach the top of their support. Expect plants to reach up to 300cm (118.1 inches) in height and spread up to 30cm (11.8 inches). Hardiness: Half-hardy. Position: Full sun. Supplied as a packet of 35 seeds.
