The Olive Tree (Standard) is a slow-growing, self-fertile evergreen tree traditionally associated with the Mediterranean but now successfully grown in the UK. It features attractive grey-green foliage atop a tall, slender stem, creating an elegant, modern addition to any garden or patio. In long, hot summers, small fragrant flowers appear, followed by smooth green fruits.Ideal for very sheltered gardens or large containers, this olive tree grows to approximately 150cm (59"") tall with a spread of 50cm (20"").For best results, grow in large containers with soil-based compost such as John Innes No. 3, allowing movement to a cold greenhouse or sheltered spot during winter. In mild areas, planting directly in the ground in neutral to alkaline soil and full sun is possible. Avoid very fertile soils, which encourage foliage over fruit. Stake the tree at planting for support and secure with a tree tie.Keep the base free from weeds and grass within a 30cm radius. Apply a mulch of well-rotted manure or compost in spring to retain moisture during summer. Water well in dry periods, especially in the first 2–3 years.Prune in late spring or early summer by removing old, unproductive branches and misplaced growth to encourage new shoots.
