Growing this herb at home provides a fresh, high-quality ingredient that is often difficult to find in stores, making it a valuable addition to any herb garden. How to Grow - Sow basil seeds from February to June, or year-round for indoor cultivation. - Sow seeds on the surface of free-draining seed compost and lightly cover. - Maintain a temperature of 15-25°C (59-77°F) or seal in a polythene bag until germination (14-21 days). - Keep compost slightly moist but avoid overwatering as seedlings emerge. - Once large enough to handle, transplant seedlings into 7.5cm (3in) pots and grow in cooler conditions. - After the risk of frost has passed, harden off plants before planting outdoors in a sheltered, sunny spot with well-drained, fertile soil. - Alternatively, grow in patio containers, window boxes, or on an indoor windowsill. - Water moderately, being careful not to splash the leaves. - Harvest leaves regularly to encourage bushy growth and pinch out any flowers to prolong the harvest. - Basil leaves can be dried, frozen, or infused into oils and vinegars for later use.
