Verbascum Dark Eyes, commonly known as Mullein, is a semi-evergreen perennial that is ideal for ground cover and filling gaps. Large textured dark green leaves grow into rosettes and tall stems spring from its centre, blooming saucer-shaped pale yellow flowers in early- to mid-summer. As the name would suggest, these flowers boast a dramatic deep red colour, appearing like Dark Eyes in the centre of each flower.This clump forming perennial grows best in chalky, loamy soils that are well drained, even in winter. It prefers full sun, preferably in a south-facing spot and is relatively hardy, coping with temperatures as low as -10°C. Other than deadheading to prolong flowering, Verbascum Dark Eyes requires very little maintenance and is easy to grow, even for novice gardeners.Mullein is tolerant of drought and copes well with poor soil. This is a highly adaptable plant that is ideal for flower beds, borders and gravel gardens.
