With origins in Japan, Korea and China, this evergreen perennial makes excellent ground cover. It has thick dense foliage which spreads out as it grows. The plant prefers partial to full shade. It is fairly hardy and can handle temperatures down to -15°C. This very low shrub is great as ground cover on banks and slopes. And is perfectly suited for groundcover underneath taller shrubs and trees. It has thick, waxy leaves that are in the shape of a rhombus. The variegated leaves have a mix a central dark green with margins of a cream or off-white color. The “Terminalis” is resistant to larger pests like deer and rabbits. And it is generally disease free, but can be attacked by slugs and snails. The flowers form on the end of erect spikes that rise up throughout the plant. The flowers form in bunches and are generally small and white in colour. This species can be aggressive and invasive, if left without monitoring. It will spread and propagate through underground root systems. It is generally used as excellent ground cover, as it tends to cover up 85% of the terrain in which it is planted. And is able to handle drier conditions, although it prefers a general level of moisture in well-draining soils.
