Smokey is one of the most popular saskatoon cultivars for producing an impressive crop of flavoursome juicy berries ready to harvest from early summer. Also known as serviceberries or juneberries, the fruits have a wonderful flavour and can be eaten fresh or added to smoothies, preserves, and desserts. That’s not all this garden shrub has to offer. In spring, it is covered with masses of small, white, star-shaped flowers before the berries ripen. Dramatic hues provide plenty of visual interest in autumn as the foliage turns from dark green to fiery shades of yellow, orange and crimson. Saskatoon Smokey makes an excellent small garden specimen tree. It is undemanding and easy to care for, only needing occasional pruning when mature. Add plenty of organic matter into the soil and plant in a sunny spot sheltered from strong winds. You may need to protect your delicious berries from birds, who find them irresistible.
