Blue Velvet is a rich Sweet Pea variety boasting ruffled flowers in a deep shade of purple-blue. The large flowers emerge on tall stems from mid-green foliage, with each stem bearing as many as 6 or 7 blooms. Flowering from June to October, these Sweet Peas are highly fragrant, with a strong, heady scent. They are ideal for cut flower arrangements, lasting up to 5 days in a vase indoors. Being climbing plants, Blue Velvet Sweet Peas benefit from a support in the form of a trellis or obelisk to scramble up. They are easy to grow, preferring a sheltered spot in full sun in well-draining soil. Water well after planting and during dry spells to keep the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged. Pinch the tips of young plants to promote bushy growth and an abundance of flowers and deadhead spent blooms to encourage further flowering. Also known by the botanical name Lathyrus odoratus, Blue Velvet is a hugely popular cultivar due to its reliability and resistance to pests and diseases. It is also incredible for attracting bees, butterflies, and other pollinators, turning your garden into a buzzing hive of activity.
