Euphorbia lactea f. cristata is instantly recognizable for its intricate, fan-shaped crest, resembling a piece of underwater coral, often featuring rimmed edges in shades of pink, purple, or silver. It is almost always sold as a grafted specimen, where the crested top is spliced onto a straight green rootstock to elevate it for display. Warning: As a Euphorbia, it contains a toxic white latex sap that is irritating to skin and eyes, so it must be handled with extreme care. Unlike true desert cacti, this succulent prefers bright, filtered light and warm temperatures, as harsh direct sun can easily scorch the crest. It appreciates a slightly more regular watering schedule, allowing just the top inch of soil to dry out between drinks. Plant it in well-draining soil and protect it from cold drafts, as it is quite sensitive to temperature fluctuations.
