It portrays the gambler, the doddering grandfather (Peter Ustinov) together with his faulty reasoning and obsession for gambling, which transcends any consideration for others (even for a dependant grandchild), in a very realistic way. The portrayal of Quilp, the loathsome, money-grubbing landlord by Tom Courtenay, is second to none.
