CAMELLIA BLOOD OF CHINA - The Camellia japonica Blood of China commonly known as Japanese camellia, is an evergreen plant sometimes called Victor Emmanuel. This UK garden ready, flowering shrub has dark green glossy oval to ovate leaves and an upright growing habit. It produces deep red doubled petalled flowers in late Winter and mid Spring.PATIO POTS - The Blood of China, camellias are ideal for growing in patio pots and containers but they can also be grown straight into the ground. Due to their dense foliage Camellia plants are an ideal choice for a medium height flowering hedge. When mature they can grow to a height of 2 to 3 metres.GROWING CONDITIONS - These outdoor flowering plants are happiest in a semi shaded location with light dappled shade from other trees and shrubs. A westerly or sheltered northerly location is best. Avoid a south or east facing position, as the early morning sun can damage the flowers. Camellias are best grown in neutral to slightly acidic soil, they don’t cope well in chalky or alkaline soils. When planting in these soil conditions it is advised to add acidic matter or ericaceous compost.WATERING - Camellias like to be watered with rainwater and require regular watering when newly planted. This is usually the first 18 months after planting. It is also important to water throughout the Summer months as this is when the flower buds are produced.
