Kumeu River Wines have made their name by producing superb Chardonnay in the little-known Auckland region of Kumeu. But Rays Road shows they’re just as good at winemaking further afield. Grapes are plucked from a new vineyard site in Hawke’s Bay, nearly 500km to the south, where a limestone hillside is dry-farmed to yield high quality grapes. Hand-harvested, whole-bunch pressed and fermented with wild yeast in old French oak barrels, this wine is zesty and fragrant. White flower and citrus aromas mingle with mineral complexity coming from the terroir. With all that fresh acidity, it’s calling out for a creamy seafood risotto.
