Avro Vulcan - Postwar Military Aircraft 4 (Ian Allan)\n\nAs the RAF's prime V-bombers the Vulcan carried both free-fall and stand-off nuclear weapons during its career.  Nevertheless, this magnificent delta-winged bomber did not fly in anger until 1 May 1982 when Vulcan B.2 XM607 dropped a stick of 21 conventional 1,000lb bombs on Port Stanley airfield.  The first of these bombs hit the centre of the runway, and other bombs struck a small hanger and a store dump by the control tower, and closed the only road to Port Stanley.  In achieving this, Operation 'Black Buck 1' had an impact on the outcome of the war out of all proportion to its destructive effects, not only was use of Port Stanley denied to Argentinian Skyhawks, Mirages and Super Etendards, but also the raid forced the dispersal of aircraft and troops to guard them.  Just as importantly it convinced the military junta of Britain's resolve and ability to attack targets in mainland Argentina, and was a boos;
