With sales from succeeding shows, he managed to cover his tuition and expenses leading to graduating from McMaster University in 1951 and Hamilton Teachers College, 1952. At age 22 he exhibited with members of Canada's Group of Seven, leading to official recognition by the National Gallery of Canada as \""Canadian Painter\"" in August, 1956.
