Long after steam engines disappeared from passenger rail lines, they were used extensively around Scotland's coal mines until as late as 1981. In this collection of 58 superb photographs, taken by the author during the mid- to late 1970s, these engines are shown hard at work at collieries in Ayrshire, Fife, Clackmannanshire, Stirlingshire, Lanarkshire and the Lothians. Enhanced by informative captions detailing the history of the use of steam locomotives \u2013 affectionately known as 'Pugs' \u2013 in Scottish mining, the collieries included are Barony, Bedlay, Cairnhill, Comrie, Dunaskin, Frances, Kinneil, Manor Powis, Mauchline, Minnevey, Niddrie, Pennyvennie and Polkemmet.
