'Rolls-Royce Hillington - Portrait of a Shadow Factory' by Peter Sherrard\nThis is the story of the Rolls-Royce factory at Hillington, just outside Glasgow, that was initially built to produce the famous Merlin engine of World War Two. It describes the selection and building of the site and the efforts made to get the factory up and running while the Battle of Britain raged in the skies in 1940. It shows how the site quickly got to grips with producing the Merlin in vast numbers with a total of 23, 647 being produced by the war's end. After the war, Rolls-Royce purchased the site and continued Merlin and Griffon production there. Hillington began to make the new Rolls-Royce Avon turbojet in the post-war period and latterly became a vital manufacturing centre for parts for many Rolls-Royce gas turbine engines such as the RB211 and Trent.\n\nHillington operated continuously for 65 years out of buildings designed for no more than 25.
