About the Author. Arthur Ransome was born in Leeds in 1884. He worked as a journalist and was in Russia during the 1917 Revolution, which he reported for the Manchester Guardian. After settling in the Lake District with his Russian wife, he wrote Swallows and Amazons in 1929, launching a beloved series of children's adventure novels. In 1936 he won the inaugural Carnegie Medal for Pigeon Post. Ransome died in 1967 and is buried in the Lake District, the landscape that inspired his most famous stories..
