The Family of Hilda by Neil Edington Paperback 9798564747394

This second novel of Anglo-Saxon Royal Ladies is an account of the life of St Hilda and her close family. The tragic murder of her father and adoption by her uncle, King Edwin, and his Queen, Ethelberga, transforms the lives of St Hilda and her sister, St Hereswid. His defeat ten years later, and ruthless pillaging by the Mercians, leads to the dispersal of the family to Kent and Iona. The unfolding drama follows the ever changing dynamics of St Hilda's life in Iona, Kent, and the call by Aidan to a vocation in Northumbria with the challenges of setting up religious houses at Wearmouth, Hartlepool, and, finally, Whitby. Amidst challenges by wars and the plague, in addition to the intrigues of the court, the novel centres on the close relationships that Hilda maintains throughout her life. Her cousin, the young St Eanswyth of Folkestone, is a formative inspiration during her time in Kent. But it is the loyalty to the friendship of Queen Ethelberga, her daughter, who becomes Queen Eanf.
