Water well with a fine rose. Sow seeds individually and lightly cover with vermiculite. Place in a propagator at 18–20 °C, or cover the tray with cling film and leave in a warm room. Keep soil moist.Growing OnWhen shoots appear, remove cling film. Keep seedlings in a light position but shade from direct sunlight. When plants have 4 leaves, transplant into 8 cm pots of potting compost. Grow coolly and steadily at a minimum temperature of 15 °C.Planting OutGradually accustom plants to outdoor conditions for 2–3 weeks before planting out when temperatures exceed 10 °C. Transfer to large pots (minimum 30 cm), grow bags, or a border, spacing plants 45 cm apart, either in a greenhouse or a sunny, sheltered spot outdoors.SupportCordon/indeterminate/vine varieties require training up canes, strings, or wires. Remove side shoots as they appear.AdviceTomatoes are thirsty and hungry plants.
