Apple Mint (often known as Woolly Mint) is a charming herb cultivated primarily for the fruity, sweet fragrance found in its rounded, velvety leaves. This mild flavour, which blends traditional mint with distinct notes of green apple, is released gently when the soft, hairy foliage is touched or crushed. It is traditionally used as a refreshing garnish for summer drinks and fruit salads, or made into a delicate apple mint jelly, as its taste is sweeter and less harsh than common peppermint. This plant is typically grown as a vigorous, upright hardy perennial that spreads rapidly via underground runners. It is robust and frost-tolerant, usually dying back in winter to return with vigour in the spring. For the best results and the largest, softest leaves, plant it in a location with partial shade or full sun. It is not drought-tolerant and thrives in fertile, rich soil that is kept consistently moist through regular watering.
