Also known as Common Fennel, Fennel Green is perfect for planting towards the back of your kitchen or herb garden. Its impressive height adds interest to a border, while bright green and yellow hues add a summery burst of colour. Fennel Green has a sweet aromatic fragrance, a little like aniseed. You’ll find bees and other beneficial insects are attracted to this herb, which helps keep other crops pest-free. This is a culinary herb that is often used in Italian and French dishes. Its leaves are a popular accompaniment to meat and fish and make a tangy addition to salads. Common Fennel is widely known to help with digestive issues and prevent heartburn. The seeds are the most flavoursome part of the plant and can be harvested in autumn for use during winter. If you don’t want to harvest the seeds for cooking then it’s best to deadhead spent flowers to prevent self seeding and invasive growth. Cutting the plant back to ground level in autumn will promote healthy and abundant fresh new growth in spring. This herb dies back in autumn and bursts back into life when the temperatures begin to rise again.
