This intense aroma, widely considered the purest lemon scent in the plant kingdom, is released effortlessly when the foliage is brushed or crushed. It is traditionally used as a supreme infusion for herbal teas and tisanes, but also works beautifully in syrups, ice creams, and fruit salads, where it imparts a zesty kick without the acidity of actual lemon juice. This plant is typically grown as a tender deciduous shrub that can become quite straggly and tall if left unpruned. It is sensitive to the cold; while it naturally drops its leaves and goes dormant in winter, the root system must be protected from hard frosts. For the best results and the highest concentration of essential oils, plant it in a location with full, sheltered sun. It is moderately drought-tolerant but thrives in poor, free-draining soil, as it will struggle in heavy, rich ground that stays wet.
