Bishop of Llandaff is a hugely popular Dahlia cultivar, and it’s easy to see why. Deeply divided, dark purple-green foliage provides colour and texture interest from spring. However, these Dahlia plants really come into their own in midsummer, when they are covered with semi-double bright red flowers featuring eye-catching yellow anthers. These striking flowers bloom all the way through to autumn and are a magnet for bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. Grow Dahlias in flower beds, borders, or pots in a sheltered, sunny spot in moist but well-draining soil. Water regularly during particularly dry spells and deadhead spent blooms to encourage more flowers to appear. Dahlia plants need to be cut back to ground level in autumn. For the best show of flowers the following year, lift the Dahlia tubers from the ground and store them away over winter, ready to be planted again in spring.
