Uneaten food, fish waste, and other organic nitrogen containing compounds are broken down by bacteria into ammonium and in further step into toxic nitrate. This nitrate is further processed by other beneficial bacteria into in low concentrations not dangerous nitrate. In a well functioning aquarium or pond the nitrate value is less than 20mg/l. Especially in the initial phase of the aquarium or pond where the fliter bacteria have not had a chance to colonise fully, regular monitoring is very important to avoid poisoning.
