For optimal growth, plant English lavender in well-draining soil, selecting a sunny location. Lavender dislikes overly wet conditions, particularly during the winter months. Improve heavy soils by incorporating coarse grit or sharp sand before planting. When planting English lavender in large patio containers, use a free-draining soil-based compost, such as John Innes No. 3.To encourage a bushy growth habit, prune lavender plants after planting.
