Lemon Balm is a vigorous and widely loved herb cultivated almost exclusively for the intense, fresh citrus aroma found in its crinkled green leaves. This potent scent, which is refreshing and uplifting, is released instantly when the leaves are rubbed or steeped in hot water. It is traditionally used as a calming natural remedy for stress and anxiety, particularly in herbal teas, but also makes a zesty addition to fruit salads, summer drinks, and poultry dishes where a hint of lemon is desired without the acidity. This plant is typically grown as a hardy, bushy perennial that forms a rapidly spreading clump, making it an excellent filler for wilder areas of the garden or a bee-friendly patch. It is incredibly tough and frost-tolerant, dying back in winter before shooting up vigorously again in spring. For the best results and most aromatic oils, plant it in a location with full sun or partial shade. It is moderately drought-tolerant but performs best in fertile, well-drained soil that is kept evenly moist to prevent the leaves from browning at the edges.
