This plant is typically grown as a hardy perennial that spreads aggressively via underground runners, earning it a reputation as a garden "thug" if left unchecked. It is extremely tough and frost-tolerant, dying back in winter only to return with vigour in the spring. For the best results and lush foliage, plant it in a location with partial shade, though it tolerates sun well if kept damp.
